Ethereal is a free network protocol analyzer for Unix and Windows. It allows you to examine data from a live network or from a capture file on disk. You can interactively browse the capture data, viewing summary and detail information for each packet. Ethereal has several powerful features, including a rich display filter language and the ability to view the reconstructed stream of a TCP session.

It can listen alternatively on all the 14 channels, write packet information in real time, can search access points and associated client stations, and can generate a graphic of the architecture using GraphViz. All network traffic can be saved in the libpcap format for post analysis. It works under Linux with a PrismII, CISCO, or Orinoco card and with the linux-wlan, hostap, Aironet and Atheros driver.

kimate is a bash-script for linux with the use to connect to wireless networks, which allow only some clients with special mac-adresses to participate. It analyses log-files from kismet and tests the wlan for them. The whole thing works if one of the special clients leaves the network and you can use the mac-adress for your purpose.
