South African president cleared in 'swimming pool' scandal

South Africa president Jacob Zuma spent around $24 million on upgrades at his private residenceSouth African President Jacob Zuma will not have to repay any of the public money spent on upgrades to his private residence that included a swimming pool and chicken run, the police minister announced Thursday. The spending of some $24 million on improvements at Zuma's private residence at Nkandla in rural KwaZulu-Natal province has been one of the biggest scandals dogging the embattled head of state. Last year, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela, the country's ombudswoman, found that Zuma and his family had "unduly benefited" from the work on his home, which also included cattle enclosure, and recommended that he repay some of the money.

Putin backs Blatter, says FIFA arrests shows U.S. meddling abroad
By Darya Korsunskaya and Dmitriy Rogovitskiy MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin defended Russia's right to host the 2018 soccer World Cup on Thursday and accused the United States of meddling outside its jurisdiction in the arrest of top officials from world governing body FIFA. Putin said the arrests in Switzerland on Wednesday were an "obvious attempt" to prevent FIFA head Sepp Blatter's re-election this week but that the 79-year-old had Russia's backing. "If anything happened, it did not happen on U.S. territory and the United states has nothing to do with it," he said.
